Schilling commanded 1 Division
in western Java when war broke out in the
Pacific. Schilling correctly anticipated that the Japanese would land at Bantam Bay, and he planned to use 1 Regiment to attempt to hold up the Japanese long enough for 2 Regiment and Blackforce (a composite Allied unit) to counterattack. This plan collapsed when 230 Regiment successfully flanked the Dutch roadblock.
