Tokunoshima (128.946E 27.780N) is a small island (about 16 miles or 26 km long) located about 20 miles (32 km) southwest of Amami Oshima.
The northeastern part of the island is rugged, being dominated by Mount
Inokawa (about 630' or 190m) in the east, but the southern and western
parts of the island are more level, and the Japanese had constructed an airfield here by 1945.
