Ominato (141.156E 41.258N) is the northernmost port of Honshu and was an important base for aircraft, light naval forces, and submarines patrolling Tsugaru Straits between Honshu and Hokkaido. However, its repair facilities were limited.
The port had four small shipyards that constructed submarine chasers.
When war broke out, Ominato was
headquarters of 5 Fleet.
