Hitachi was founded in 1910 by Odaira Namihei as an electrical
repair shop and electric motor manufacturer. The company soon expanded
into power generators and
electrical appliance manufacture. By the time
of the Pacific War, Hitachi Kokuki K.K.
was manufacturing aircraft
engines and trainer aircraft
while Hitachi Seisakusho K.K. had diversified into shipbuilding at its
Sakurajima yard at Kagoshima.
