The Colossus class has been described as a scaled-down Illustrious class. However, the design was fundamentally different, being based on a merchant hull to keep down costs. The ships had no armor protection at all. However, they had better speed than escort carriers and could operate a reasonable air group for a light carrier. This varied from unit to unit but consisted of Barracudas and Fireflies on Vengeance.
