Chekiang

Digital relief map of Chekiang province, China

Chekiang is a province on the eastern China coast.  Most of the province is mountainous, though there is flatter terrain north and east of the provincial capital and chief port of Hangchow.

Hangchow was occupied by the Japanese on 24 December 1937, but much of the rest of the province remained in Chinese hands. Most of the Doolittle raiders crashed or bailed out in Chekiang, and the Japanese inflicted a heavy toll of civilian casualties in retribution for the raid in a campaign that began on 14 May 1942.
