The Soya was ordered by the Russiansbut
requisitioned by the
Japanese Navy at the start of the Second World War in 1939. She was
completed as an ammunition ship/icebreaker for service in the
northernmost reaches of Japan's empire, but ended up serving mostly in
the South Seas. She survived the war and had a distinguished postwar
career, including as an Antarctic research ship. She is now a museum
ship at the Museum of Maritime Science in Tokyo.
