Shwedaung (Shwe Taung; 95.214E 18.705N) is a river port on the Irrawady northwest of Rangoon. It was also the regional rail head.
The town fell to the Japanese on about 28 March 1942. This trapped a British task force of brigade
strength, which attempted to fight its way through the town. The
British were eventually forced to abandon their vehicles and retreat on
foot to the north, suffering some371 casualties in the process.
