John "Black Jack" Reed graduated from Annapolis in 1911 and was among the older officers who took flight training to improve their career prospects. He earned his aviator's wings in 1936. He was captain of the Wasp before advancing to flag rank and taking command of the Northwest Sea Frontier. He had a reputation as a "sundowner," naval slang for a harsh disciplinarian, but was considered a dependable leader.
