The PC-461s were completed in 1940-45. They were designed as well-armed coastal antisubmarine warfare vessels, with an intended speed of 22 knots. However, most never exceeded 18 knots, due to the Navy’s proclivity for loading them down with additional equipment. They were relatively nimble but tended to roll in heavy seas, a tendency that never seemed to bother the U.S. Navy.
A total of about 362 steel-hulled patrol craft were constructed during the war.
