Nanning (108.32E 22.84N) is a city of southern China. It was likely the headquarters of 4 War Area at the time of the Pearl Harbor attack.
The city was the location of a rare defeat for the Japanese prior to the Pacific War. An expedition landed on the coastline to the south on 19 November 1939 and seized the city on 23 November but was then driven out on 29 October 1940 by Chinese forces. However, the invasion was an effective spoiling attack, disrupting Chinese preparations for the Winter Offensive of 1939-1940.
The city fell to the Japanese a second time, on 24
December 1944, during the Ichi-go
offensive. The Chinese retook the city on 27 May 1945.
