Mergui (Myeik; 98.60E
12.43N) is a port in Burma's Tenasserim region, on the west
coast of the Kra Isthmus. This was a tin
mining district, producing about 2400 tons per year. The port had a
small airstrip, part of the air
bridge from India to Singapore.
The port was defended by 2 Burma Rifles Battalion (2 Burma Brigade) when war broke out. However, the garrison was evacuated following the loss of Tavoy on 19 January 1941.
