Naval History and Heritage Command
Melbourne (144.962E 37.813S) is the capital of the state of Victoria in Australia and one of Australia's most important ports, with a total population of about 1,077,000 persons. It is located on the Yarra River near its mouth on Hobson's Bay. There was a military airfield nearby, at Laverton.
The city was headquarters for the Australian Army,
and when war broke out it was defended by 1 Armored Division (a
training cadre), 2 Cavalry Division,
and 3 and 4 Divisions. The latter
three were militia formations.
