Matsui had commanded
113 Regiment of 56 Division in north Burma before being promoted to major
general and command of 105
Independent Mixed Brigade, a scratch force organized to
defend Rangoon in April 1945. He
was issued
a confused series of orders that ended with him retreating with his
surviving forces across the Sittang
River into Tenasserim in late July
1945. During this movement, he somewhat lightened the dismal record of
the Japanese Army by releasing all
his unfit prisoners of war,
on 30
April 1945.
