Charles Mason was a pioneering Navy aviator (graduating from
flight training as Naval Aviator #52) and commanded Hornet in the South Pacific until her
loss in the Battle of Santa
Cruz. Promoted to rear admiral, he was briefly the air commander
for the Solomon Islands,
but was evacuated with severe malaria
and pneumonia.
