Lutong (114.001E 4.467N) is an oil field on the Borneo coast just north of Miri. Production was roughly 2.1 million barrels a year in 1940 and there was a refinery and airfield.
The Japanese landed elements of 35 Brigade (Kawaguchi Detachment) and 2 Yokosuka SNLF near Miri on 16 December 1941. By then the Dutch had already destroyed the oil field and refinery at Lutong.
The field was recaptured on 20 June 1945 by Australian troops. By then the refinery was thoroughly demolished.
