Kawasaki (139.745E 35.515N) is a city on the west shores of Tokyo Bay, south of Tokyo. By the 17th century, it was already an important stop in the Kyoto-Tokyo highway. In the late 19th century, it became an important rail station, and industrial development began. Kawasaki became an independent municipality in 1924 and the port was rapidly developed thereafter.
The shipyard constructed a number of smaller carriers, cruisers, and submarines for the Japanese Navy.
