Kasumigaura (140.214E
36.081N) was a large saltwater lake northeast of Tokyo. The Imperial Navy
established its flying school
here (Tsuchiura) and named Yamamoto
as one of its first
commandants. The Kasumigaura,
Tsuchiura, and Suzuka Air
Groups were based here, with 358 Willow trainers and a handful of
torpedo bombers.
After the war, the lake was dammed off from the sea, and it became a freshwater lake. Regrettably, it has also become heavily polluted, mostly by agricultural runoff.
