Jamshedpur (86.20E
22.79N) was founded in 1907 by Jamshedji Tata for the express
purpose of
becoming the iron and steel
center of India. The first
blast furnaces of the Tata Iron and Steel
Company were completed in 1911, and by 1914 production of pig iron had
reached
150,000 tons per year. Production was 800,000 tons per year by 1942.
