Hayler commanded Honolulu
in the Battle of Tassafaronga,
where by sharp maneuvering he managed to avoid both the Japanese torpedoes and a collision with a
friendly cruiser. At the Battle
of Kolombangara, Honolulu's gunnery demolished Jintsu
but Honolulu could not avoid
taking a torpedo in her bow. Hayler later commanded a cruiser
division in the Marianas
campaign and the Battle of Surigao
Strait.
