Hayakawa Mikio was captain of the Chokai, Goto's flagship in the early months of the war. By late 1944 he was a rear admiral and commander of Destroyer Squadron 2 at Singapore. He escorted the Kurita force at Leyte Gulf, and was killed when one of his "Tokyo Express" runs to Leyte was annihilated by air strikes from three of Halsey's task groups.
