In 1941, Eureka (124.16W 40.807N) was a major lumber center, with an active port and a salmon fleet. Though most of the timber was Douglas fir and Ponderosa pine, enough redwood was harvested to earn this region the nickname of the Redwood Empire. The population was 23,058 in 1950.
