Akashiba Yaezo was Director of the Japanese Military Academy at the start of the Pacific War. He was promoted to lieutenant general and commander of 25 Division in October 1942, and commanded Imperial Guards Division from October 1943 and 53 Army from April 1945. As commander of 53 Army, he was responsible for defending Sagami Bay in the event of an invasion of the Japanese home islands.
