Victoria Point (98.540E
9.994N) is the southernmost point of Burma
and was the site of an important British
airfield in late 1941. In
the event of war, this airfield would
be a vital link in the air bridge through which Allied air reinforcements
could be sent from India to Malaya. The Japanese understood
this, and landed elements of the 143rd Regiment, 55 Division, 25 Army
on the opposite coast of the Kra Isthmus at Jumbhorn (Chumphon) on 8
December 1941. These forces seized Victoria Point on 13 December
after the British evacuated their small garrison (consisting of a battalion of 2 Burma Brigade.)
