Merritt was a 1917 graduate of The Citadel. He is
credited with being the first aviator to experiment with dive bombing. He was also the
first American to be shot
down in the European theater, over the Libyan desert. He survived to command 1
Marine Aircraft Wing in the Pacific in the final weeks of the war.
