The Elizabeth C. Stantons
were completed from 1940 to
the end of the war. They were Maritime
Commission standard C-3
Cargo merchants converted to troop
transports,
which did not make for particularly comfortable troop
compartments. Still,
they were large and fast with good range, with a maximum boom capacity of 30 tons.
